SPOCA takes stands on shoreline regulatory issues before the legislature, local government, and with the media. SPOCA is a non-profit organization with the goal of protecting and restoring access to and use of our shorelines. Public and private access to shorelines has become dramatically impacted by a complex web of rules and regulations that hinders even routine maintenance and ordinary use of private shoreline property. With each new and seemingly conflicting regulation, the rights of property owners become more restricted, and more difficult to understand.
SPOCA's goal is to help fix and standardize the regulatory landscape, so that property owners do not have to constantly struggle to preserve existing shoreline structures, or to implement safer and more eco-friendly designs into existing structures.
Environmental concerns will always remain an important issue for SPOCA, because without clean and safe water, shoreline enjoyment is only further depleted. Education is another focus for SPOCA. Keeping our members, and the general public, informed about upcoming legislation, environmental concerns, and new regulatory restrictions is a top priority for us.
SPOCA was organized beginning in September 2005 as an outgrowth of the Waterfront Regulatory Committee of the Northwest Marine Trade Association.
SPOCA was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2006 and is governed by a volunteer board of directors. SPOCA meets on the 2nd Monday of each month from noon-1:30 at the Northwest Marine Trade Association Conference Room, located at 1900 North Northlake Way, #233, Seattle. Meetings are open to members who contact SPOCA in advance so we can assure adequate seating.
